Unable to start IBM WebSphere Application Server

Technote (troubleshooting)


The IBM WebSphere Application Server cannot be started if the Generic JVM argument contains a -Djava.library.path option and when the directory names in the path has spaces.


The following is logged in the native_stderr.log file:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Files\IBM\Rational\Focal
Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: Files\IBM\Rational\Focal
at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:421)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:652)
at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:346)

IBM Websphere Application Server fails to start when Generic JVM argument contains a -D option with a string value that included spaces.

Resolving the problem

To start the IBM WebSphere Application Server:

  • In Windows, specify a short name version of the directory.
    To find the short name version of the directory, go to the parent directory of the directory that contains spaces and run the command dir/x.
  • In Linux and Solaris, specify a directory that does not have space in the directory name.
