Rational Jazz Team Server cannot be started with multiple instances of Apache Tomcat running

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempts to start multiple Apache Tomcat Application servers simultaneously results in failure to start IBM Rational Jazz Team Server due to "Address Already in Use" error.

Symptom

The following error will be seen in the Tomcat catalina.log file:

SEVERE: Catalina.start:
LifecycleException: service.getName(): "Catalina"; Protocol handler start failed: java.net.BindException: Address already in use: NET_Bind:9080
at org.apache.catalina.connector.Connector.start(Connector.java:1097)....

Cause

This error occurs because there is already an instance of Tomcat running on the default port 8080, or the original instance failed to shutdown java.exe properly and it is still running.

Diagnosing The Problem

Run netstat -aon and check to see if ports 9443, 9080, 9009 (or your custom port where Tomcat is running)

Resolving The Problem

Only one instance can be open and running at a time.

To resolve this error, close down one of the open instances of Apache Tomcat.
