Troubleshooting
Problem
The Apply Label Wizard in IBM Rational ClearCase takes a longer than expected amount of time to launch.
Symptom
When attempting to open the Apply Label Wizard on a Microsoft Windows machine, it takes an unusually long time for the graphical user interface (GUI) window to appear. Rather than opening immediately or within seconds, it may take several minutes or longer.
The problem is both user and machine specific. If the user moves to another machine, the problem may not be seen. Likewise, if another user uses the slow machine, the problem also may not be seen.
Cause
Invalid entries in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Atria\ClearCase\CurrentVersion\Workspaces registry keys. These entries are user-specific per machine.
Environment
Windows
Diagnosing The Problem
This solution contains information about modifying the system registry. Before making any modifications to the Microsoft Registry Editor, it is strongly recommended that you make a backup of the existing registry. For more information describing how to back up the registry, refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base article 256986 |
---|
To verify that this is the cause of the problem:
- Close out all ClearCase GUIs on the problem system.
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Atria\ClearCase\CurrentVersion in the Windows registry.
- Rename the Workspaces entry to Workspaces.bak
- Re-try launching Apply Label Wizard
If the problem no longer occurs, this confirms the slowdown is caused by scanning of the entries in Workspaces -- one or more of which will be inaccessible or invalid.
Additionally, using a tool such as Microsoft Process Monitor will show noticeable gaps in time for the clearapplywizard.com process when walking the entries in the Workspaces subkey.
Resolving The Problem
Permanently renaming the Workspaces key to Workspaces.bak will re-generate a fresh version on next GUI launch. If this is not desired, an effort should be made to verify all paths are valid and accessible under Workspaces. Those that are not should be pruned out.
