Migrating Rational Application Developer for WebSphere using Migration Wizard results in deleting comments from xml files

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Attempts to run the Specification Migration Wizard to a newer J2EE version results in deleting comments from application.xml (1.3), web.xml(2.3) and ejb-jar.xml (2.0) in IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere.

Symptom

The problem is exhibited when running Specifications Migration Wizard from J2EE version 1.2/1.3 to 1.4/5.0.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create a new Enterprise Application Project
  2. Set EAR version to 1.2 or 1.3
  3. Add a comment to application.xml file

    For example:

<!-- now you see me.... -->
  4. Run Specification Migration Wizard and select EAR version 1.4 or 5.0
  5. The comment added in step (3) is deleted

The same scenario occurs with web.xml(2.3) and ejb-jar.xml (2.0).

Important Note: When running Specification Migration Wizard from J2EE 1.4 to 5.0, the problem does not occur (xml comment remains on it's place).

Cause

Comment migration is not supported from DTD to schema migration which happens in the above mentioned use case since Rational Application Developer for WebSphere 6.x version.

Resolving the problem

Currently, there is no plan to fix this issue in future versions.

WORKAROUND:

After migration, perform a file comparison and migrate the comments manually.
