Question

How do you update the Network IPS (GX) without an internet connection?

Answer

This article describes how to manually apply firmware and intrusion prevention updates to a Network IPS without an internet connection.

For security content updates (XPUs) at firmware 4.x, follow the instructions below:
  1. Sign in to the IBM Security Download Center.
  2. Click the Download link that is located on the left side of the page, which is listed under My software.
  3. Under My Products, click IBM Security Content (PAM,CAM,AV). Then, under Product Lines, select Security Content Updates (CAM/PAM).
  4. Click the Update link for the latest version or the desired XPU version you want to apply.
  5. Find the IBM Security Content Update (PAM) entry and click the HTTPS Download button to start the download process. This can be downloaded to the folder of your choosing.
  6. Once the file downloads, locate the file and ensure it has a .pkg extension.
    Note: Some browsers might add a .zip extension to this. If it does, remove the .zip so that it ends with .pkg.
  7. Log in to the Proventia Manager Local Management Interface (LMI).
  8. Click Manage System Settings. Then, under the Updates and Licensing section, click Administration.
  9. Click the Upload Update File link on the left side under Update tools.
  10. Now, browse to the XPU .pkg file downloaded in Step 5 and click Upload.
  11. Once the upload completes, click the Intrusion Prevention tab.
  12. Click the Install Update button to start the installation.



For firmware updates at firmware 4.x, follow the instructions below:
  1. Sign in to the IBM Security Download Center.
  2. Click the Download link on the left side of the page, which is listed under My Software.
  3. Under My Products, click IBM Security Network IPS (GV/GX Series). Then, under Product Lines, select the appropriate product line.
  4. Find the desired firmware version and click the Firmware and Recovery Images link.
  5. Find the appropriate upgrade entry and click the HTTPS Download button to start the download process. This can be downloaded to the folder of your choosing.
  6. Once the file completes downloading, locate the file and ensure it has a .pkg extension.
    Note: Some browsers might add a .zip extension to this. If it does, remove the .zip so that it ends with .pkg.
  7. Log in to the Proventia Manager Local Management Interface (LMI).
  8. Click Manage System Settings. Then, under the Updates and Licensing section, click Administration.

  10. Now, browse to the firmware .pkg file that is downloaded in Step 5 and click Upload.

    Note: Firmware updates require the appliance to be rebooted. Schedule this accordingly.
