Problem
This technote explains how to resolve a hanging issue that can occur when launching IBM Rational ClearQuest Designer for 7.1.
Symptom
When attempting to open ClearQuest Designer 7.1, the splash screen appears for a moment, but disappears. Designer does not launch. No error is occurs.
Cause
There is a problem with the Eclipse workspace used by ClearQuest Designer.
Diagnosing The Problem
The .log file in this directory by default:
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\.Rational\ClearQuest\designer_workspace\.metadata\
You can see this error in the log:
!MESSAGE The workspace exited with unsaved changes in the previous session; refreshing workspace to recover changes.
at org.eclipse.core.internal.resources.Workspace.startup(Workspace.java:1949)
at org.eclipse.core.internal.resources.Workspace.open(Workspace.java:1713)
Resolving The Problem
Solution 1:
Clean the ClearQuest Designer workspace:
1. Open the command prompt window.
2. Run this command (exactly how it is below):
"C:\Program Files\IBM\RationalSDLC\ClearQuest\Designer\cqdesigner.exe" -clean
Note: You can also run the command above using the following:
Go to "Start" > "Run..."
In the screen that will appear type the command "cqdesigner.exe -clean" (without quotation marks) and click OK.
If your Windows Operating System doesn't have the options "Start" > ""Run", you can use the keyboard shortcut and you will be able to run the command. See below:
"Windows" key + R
In the screen that will appear type the command "cqdesigner.exe -clean" (without quotation marks) and click OK.
3. ClearQuest Designer should re-open automatically.
Solution 2:
Regenerate the ClearQuest Designer workspace.
1. Locate this directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\.Rational\ClearQuest\designer_workspace
2. Rename the directory to designer_workspace.old
3. Open ClearQuest Designer. The designer_workspace directory will be regenerated.
