Data Collection: Rational Custom Report MustGather List

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote lists all the logs you need to gather when troubleshooting IBM Rational Custom Report problems in IBM Rational Quality Manager.

Cause

This MustGather will assist you in collecting the data necessary to help you diagnose and resolve the issue. If you are unable to determine the root cause using the information collected, you should open a PMR with IBM Rational Support for further investigation providing the data collected.

Resolving The Problem

You can use the IBM Support Assistant Lite (ISA Lite) Data Collector tool to quickly collect diagnostic files, such as log files, configuration files or to run traces. This tool is bundled with version 4.x and above. ISA Lite collects information about your Jazz Team Server environment and stores the information in a .zip archive file. If you have a need to open a service request with IBM Rational Support for further assistance, you can send the archive file with the data collection so that they can help diagnose and fix problems.

The information below should be gathered in addition to the normal information and log gathering done by ISA Lite.

Collecting Rational Custom Report / Rational Insight logs

This document lists the directories where Rational Custom Report and Insight logs can be found.
There is also some detail about which problems and areas the logs apply to.

Troubleshooting the Installation process

Log locations:
Collect logs from the following locations:

Microsoft Windows:
    C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application
    Data/IBM/Installation Manager/logs
    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/datawarehouse/dw/logs [rational_insight_installation_directory]/reportal/contentstore/logs

    C:/Documents and Settings/[user]/logs
    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/cognos/datamanager/log
    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/cognos/datamanager/data
    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/cognos/logs [rational_insight_installation_directory]/AppServer/logs [rational_insight_installation_directory]/AppServer/profiles/RationalInsight/logs

Linux:
    /var/ibm/InstallationManager/logs
    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/datawarehouse/dw/logs [rational_insight_installation_directory]/reportal/contentstore/logs
    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/cognos/datamanager/log
    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/cognos/datamanager/data
    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/cognos/logs
    /opt/ibm/RationalInsight/AppServer/logs /opt/ibm/RationalInsight/AppServer/profiles/RationalInsight/logs

Collecting data:
Below is some more information about which logs are useful. You can use this information to help decide which logs to collect. If unsure, it is better to collect too many than not enough.

Installation Logs:
  • Microsoft Windows:
    C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/IBM/Installation Manager/logs
  • Linux:
    /var/ibm/InstallationManager/logs

Data Warehouse:
If you choose the automatic option to create the data warehouse database during the installation process, the script to create the database is placed in the directory, together with a wrapper (run_install_silent.bat for Windows and run_install_silent.sh for Linux) to execute the script.
    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/datawarehouse/dw
After the wrapper is executed, the log files are placed in the directory:
    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/datawarehouse/dw/logs

Content Store:

If you choose to automatically create a content store database during the installation process, the script to create the database is placed in the [rational_insight_installation_directory]/reportal/contentstore directory, together with a wrapper (run_install_silent.bat for Windows and run_install_silent.sh for Linux) to execute the script.

After the wrapper is executed, the log files are placed in the directory:

    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/reportal/contentstore/logs

If during the installation process you choose to deploy the content store and the Rational Insight server on the same system, the Rational Insight server is automatically configured to use the content store. The log files for the automatic configuration process are located in the directory:

    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/cognos/logs
The logs in this directory are plain text files which you can open with any text editor. The file names have a time stamp that indicates the date and time when the file was written during the installation process.

ETL:
The default location of the Rational Insight JDBC logs and Rational Insight Data Manager logs are listed below:

Rational Insight JDBC logs: C:/Documents and Settings/[user]/logs

Disclaimer

This solution contains information about modifying the system registry. Before making any modifications to the Microsoft Registry Editor, it is strongly recommended that you make a backup of the existing registry. For more information describing how to back up the registry, refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base article 256986

You can change the default location by modifying the register of the jdbclogpath parameter in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ODBC/ODBCINST.INI/IBM Rational insight XML ODBC Driver registry.

Rational Insight Data Manager logs:

    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/cognos/datamanager/log

Rational Insight Data Manager logs for rejected data:

    [rational_insight_installation_directory]/cognos/datamanager/data

Report Server:
These logs are useful when troubleshooting issues relating to the Web application server such as Web application availability, startup, and configuration.

Microsoft Windows

[rational_insight_installation_directory]/AppServer/logs
[rational_insight_installation_directory]/AppServer/profiles/RationalInsight/logs

Linux

/opt/ibm/RationalInsight/AppServer/logs
/opt/ibm/RationalInsight/AppServer/profiles/RationalInsight/logs

Rational Insight - Cognos Components

These logs are useful when troubleshooting issues such as content store connection and server startup.

Microsoft Windows [rational_insight_installation_directory]/cognos/logs
Linux /opt/ibm/RationalInsight/cognos/logs
