Disable Terminal Services prior to updating, rolling back, modifying, or uninstalling a Rational Team Product with Installation Manager

Preventive Service Planning

Abstract

When Terminal Services are enabled on Microsoft Windows systems, multiple users can connect
to the same system in different sessions. In this scenario, other users can continue using the product while another user is attempting to update, modify, roll back, or uninstall the product. These operations can fail if IBM Installation Manager processes are unable to modify files that are locked because they are being used in another session.

To avoid issues caused by locked files, disable Remote Desktop and log out of all other Windows sessions before attempting to complete the product update, modify, roll back, or uninstall operation..

When Remote Desktop is disabled, you cannot reconnect to the server using Remote Desktop. If your Windows session is disconnected, you must either reboot the server or log on directly through the console.

If necessary, you can use the Send Message button in the Windows Task Manager to communicate with an Active session before logging off.

Disabling Windows Terminal Services before update, roll back, modify, or uninstall operations

  1. Open a command prompt.
  2. To disable Remote Desktop, run this command: Services change logon /disable
  3. To launch the Windows Task Manager, run this command: taskmgr.exe
  4. In Windows Task Manager, click the Users tab to view Active sessions on the current system.
  5. Log off all Active sessions except the session you are using.
  6. After logging off all sessions, use Installation Manager to complete the roll back, modify, or uninstall operation.

Next steps

Verify that Remote Desktop is enabled so other users can connect to the system.

  • If the system was rebooted after the Installation Manager operation completed, Remote Desktop Connects are restarted.
  • If the system did not reboot, run this command to enable Remote Desktop Connections:

    Services change logon /enable
