Changing the shape of the bounding box from rectangle to polygon

Technote (FAQ)

Question

Can I modify the shape of the bounding box? The rectangular bounding box is not 'efficient' to me, it is too big for a link for instance. Is there any way to have a circular or polygonal bounding box instead?

Answer

By definition, the bounding box is (and will be) a rectangular box.

The display optimization algorithm (quadtree) needs such a definition. This is not going to be changed. If you have a specific performance problem, maybe there are other optimizations in your code to speed up.
