WVS 6.1.1 Installer fails to start with Sun JRE 1.6.0_04 or later

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

WVS 6.1.1 Installer window is never opened after the message "preparing the InstallShield wizard" disappears.

Symptom

After launching the WVS 6.1.1 Installer window the message "preparing the InstallShield wizard" is displayed. After some time this message screen disappears but the InstallShield window is never opened.

When performing a silent installation, a successful installation message is displayed, but no files are actually installed in the specified directory.

Cause

An API change in Sun Java Runtime since JRE version 1.6.0_04 causes an exception in the InstallShield program.

Diagnosing the problem

The installation log file, wvsInstall log contains one or more NumberFormatException:

java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "..."

Resolving the problem

Use the WebSphere Application Server JRE for the installation instead of the Sun JRE.

On Windows:

  1. In a command window, Run the command file setupCmdLine.bat located in the bin directory under the WAS installation directory. For example:

    C:\Program Files\WebSphere\AppServer\bin\setupCmdLine.bat
  2. Verify that the environment variable JAVA_HOME is set to the path of the java directory under the WAS installation directory, for example, C:\Program Files\WebSphere\AppServer\java
To check the value of JAVA_HOME enter the following command

    echo %JAVA_HOME%
  3. Launch the WVS installation

On Linux:
  1. Run the shell script setupCmdLine.sh located in the bin directory under the WAS installation directory. For example:

    /opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/bin/setupCmdLine.sh
  2. Verify that the environment variable JAVA_HOME is set to the path of the java directory under the WAS installation directory, for example, /opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/java
To check the value of JAVA_HOME enter the following command

    echo $JAVA_HOME
  3. Launch the WVS installation
