Member names do not resolve correctly from Directory Assistance when using Smarthost

 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem
In Lotus Domino, you are using Directory Assistance and have a Smarthost enabled for all local Internet domain recipients. When an Internet message arrives for a group defined in a secondary directory, the member's Internet addresses are not resolved and mail is transferred to the Smarthost in the following format:

    Test User/Org@org.com.

The Smarthost cannot resolve this type of address and a Non Delivery Report (NDR) is generated. The addresses are not generated using Global Domain documents.

Diagnosing the problem

Steps to reproduce

1. On a test server, add a secondary directory, which should have some users and a group containing some of those users. Users and group should have Internet addresses specified in the Person/Group document.

2. Add this directory to Directory Assistance.

3. In the Configuration document, define a Smarthost and enable it for all local Internet domain recipients. This can be a second Domino server. (recommending to disable the router task on the Smarthost to prevent attempts to deliver mail).

4. From a Notes client, send a message to the group. Mail will be transferred to the Smarthost with the correct Internet address for all members of the group.

5. Using telnet, send a message to the group using its Internet address. Mail will be transferred to the Smarthost with the incorrect Internet address as generated by Domino for all members of the group.

These messages cannot be resolved by the Smarthost and a NDR is sent back to the sender.

This behavior also occurs when the group is:

1. defined in the primary directory for users on the secondary directory.
2. defined in the secondary directory for users on the primary directory.

This issue does not occur when the group and users are all in the primary directory.
