Using the Add User button with various User Administration activities causes the MasterdataObject error in Rational ClearQuest

Troubleshooting


Problem

Attempts to use the Add User button with various User Administration activities such as creating users, creating groups, or editing groups results in a MasterdataObject error in IBM Rational ClearQuest.

Symptom

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create a user with the Add User button instead of clicking the OK button.

    You will see the message, "<new user> is added."

  2. Click the Cancel button to dismiss the Add User windows
    The user you created should be in the list, but it is not.
  3. Click OK
  4. Click Yes when prompted the save the changes
  5. Close the Rational ClearQuest User Administration tool
  6. When you reopen the Rational ClearQuest User Administration tool, the following error occurs:


There is a reference to an object that does not exist:

Object Type: MasterdataObject
Object: <master_dbid>

Cause

This issue was identified as a product defect and logged under APAR PK94389.

Note: A similar error message can occur as the result of database communication problems or other, separately identified defects. See the Related information section of this technote for more information.

Environment

This issue is observed in Rational ClearQuest versions 7.0.0.2 through 7.0.0.8, 7.0.1.1 through 7.0.1.7, and 7.1 through 7.1.0.2.

Resolving The Problem

The defect is fixed in the following releases

  • Rational ClearQuest 7.1.1
  • Rational ClearQuest 7.0.1.7-iFix01

Upgrade to the latest fix pack to avoid encountering this problem.

WORKAROUND:

To temporarily prevent this error from occurring if you are not able to upgrade all instances of the affected ClearQuest User Administration tool, do not click the Cancel button after using the Add User button.

When you are ready to add your last user, click OK instead of Add User.


BACKING UP FILES

Always make new database back-ups of your schema repository and user databases prior to making schema changes and performing database upgrades. Failure to create back-up copies can limit your ability to recover from a an upgrade failure, design change issues or other unforeseen failures.
