McAfee Safeboot attachments are delivered as zero length attachments

 Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem
When you send an attachment from a Lotus Notes client with McAfee Safeboot installed, the message is delivered with a zero length attachment.

Diagnosing the problem

Steps to reproduce

1. Copy and paste the message to the Inbox of a test user.

2. Edit the message and send it to an Internet user.
Using a R7.x client and server, the message is routed correctly to the Internet.
Using a R7.x client and R8.x server, the message is routed but the attachment has 0 length.

3. Quit the router and send the message to trap the mail from the client in the mail.box. View the page source and you will see the attachment is present.

4. Using the server notes.ini parameter SMTPSaveOutboundToFile=1, load the router. When the message is delivered, view the TMP file. The attachment headers are present but not the attachment. An X-KeepSent header has been added.

For information on using "SMTPSaveOutboundToFile=1" and locating the TMP file, refer to technote 1088993 "Trapping outbound SMTP MIME information".

5. Using a R8.x client, trap the message in the mail.box and view the page source. The attachment headers are present but not the attachment.

Using the MIME stream generated by the R7.x client, you can successfully telnet the message through a R8.x server to an Internet recipient.
