IBM Rational Performance Tester support of Java Applets

Question & Answer

Question

Does IBM Rational Performance Tester support recording of Java Applets in a web browser?

Cause

The Rational Performance Tester HTTP Recorder captures traffic to and from your web browser by temporarily modifying the browser's proxy settings at record time in order to route all traffic through the IBM Rational Agent Controller (RAC) service, which acts as a SOCKS or HTTP proxy. All HTTP and HTTPS traffic to and from the browser is captured by the Rational Performance Tester HTTP recorder. See technote 1266310 for details.

Answer

The Rational Performance Tester HTTP Recorder supports recording against Java Applets if the following two conditions are met:

  1. The applet communicates via HTTP and/or HTTPS.
  2. The applet obeys the LAN configuration settings set in the browser.

If you the HTML parts of your application are recorded, but the traffic from your Java Applet is not, then this would indicate that the traffic to/from the applet is not being routed through the proxy as set at the browser level. In this case Rational Performance Tester cannot capture the traffic and this type of application is not supported for testing with Rational Performance Tester.
