IBM WebSphere/Rational Host On-Demand Cached client does not load with Sun Java 6.0 update 15, 16 and update 17

Troubleshooting

Problem

When upgrading to Sun Java 6.0 update 15, update 16, or update 17, the IBM Host On-Demand cached client and download client no longer loads in any browser.

Symptom

The Host On-Demand cached client stops loading even if the client is already installed on the client machine.

The problem produces an exception in the java console:

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError.  The download client might also fail to load.

Cause

Sun introduced a new architecture in Java 6.0 update 10. Consequently, changes in 6.0 update 15 cause a load problem with the Host On-Demand cached client.

This is an issue with the Sun Java and not a bug in Host On-Demand.
Sun has determined there to be a bug in their code and is being fixed in 1.6.0_18.

Resolving The Problem

Update to Java 1.6.0_18 or later.

WORKAROUND:

As a work around for Java on Windows, the Next-generation plug-in can be disabled in the Java control panel.

  • Open the Java control panel.
  • Select the Advanced tab.
  • Select Java plug-in.
  • Uncheck 'Enable the next-generation Java plug-in'.
