How to completely uninstall AppScan Standard version 8.5 and older

How do you perform a clean uninstallation of IBM Rational AppScan Standard version 8.5.x (and older) and thoroughly remove the entire product from your machine, along with all the related references?


Uninstalling and re-installing AppScan Standard may resolve some environmental issues.


For uninstalling AppScan Standard version 8.6 and newer, refer to How to completely uninstall AppScan Standard.

In order to fully uninstall AppScan Standard 8.5 and older from your machine, perform as many of these steps as possible in the given order:

  1. Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall AppScan Standard

    Should the uninstallation fail, refer to the following Microsoft publication and follow with the steps that are provided: How to manually remove programs from the Add or Remove Programs tool

  2. Make a backup copy of your license file using one of the following methods:
    1. The .upd file that you imported into the License Key Administrator
    2. The License.lic file located in the License subfolder of the AppScan installation directory (C:\Program Files\IBM\Rational AppScan by default)

  3. Delete the AppScan Standard installation directory, along with all its contents

  4. Delete all the AppScan Standard related contents from your user profile
    1. On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003:
      C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Application Data\IBM\Rational AppScan
    2. On Windows 7 (and later):
      C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Roaming\IBM\Rational AppScan

  5. Go to Start > Run... then type the command: regedit and delete the entire registry keys (if they exist), and all of their subkeys:


    This solution contains information about modifying the system registry. Before making any modifications to the Microsoft Registry Editor, it is strongly recommended that you make a backup of the existing registry.     2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IBM\ Rational AppScan

  6. Delete the contents of the Windows TEMP folder:
    1. Click Start > Run and type %temp%
    2. Once the folder opens, click Edit > Select All > right-click anywhere on the selection > choose Delete (skip files that may be in use, and continue with the rest until as many as possible have been removed)

  7. In the same way, try to open the APPSCAN_TEMP folder:
    1. If it opens, delete all the files it contains
    2. If you get the error below, ignore it and skip to the next point


      Windows cannot find '%APPSCAN_TEMP%'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, slick the Start button, and then click Search.

  8. Clean your machine using the Windows Disk Cleanup utility:
    1. Go to Start > Run and type: cleanmgr /sageset, select Temporary Setup Files, Setup Log Files, Temporary Files and deselect anything else (here you are setting up the utility)
    2. Go to Start > Run and type: cleanmgr /sagerun (this will run the utility which may take a couple of minutes)

  9. Restart your machine
