Troubleshooting
Problem
Attempts to launch IBM Rational Rose on Microsoft Windows results in the error "suite objects.dll could not be found".
Cause
This is possibly caused by the installer not adding the Rational Common directory to the Windows PATH variable.
Diagnosing The Problem
Follow these steps to determine if the path to the common folder on your system (ex: C:\Program Files\Rational\common is in the PATH variable:
- Open the Command Prompt (select Start > Run... type cmd)
- Type PATH at the Command Prompt and click Enter
- Check the list of paths that result from the PATH command to verify if the path to the common folder, (ex: C:\Program Files\Rational\common) appears in this list.
Resolving The Problem
If the path to the common folder, (ex: C:\Program Files\Rational\common) does not appear in this list, do the following:
- Right-click on My Computer and go to Properties
- Click the Advanced tab.
On Windows 7, select "Advanced System settings" on the left in Control Panel\System and Security\System.
- Open Environment Variables.
- Under System Variables, scroll down to PATH (it might not be in all capital letters), click PATH and select Edit
- At the end of the Variable Value text box, add a semi-colon followed by the path to the common folder, (ex: C:\Program Files\Rational\common)
- Click OK on the all the dialog boxes
- Restart the computer and login as administrator for the changes to take effect
Note: It was noted that on Windows 7, you may find the path was created for Common was with capital C and in the environment variables in Path, was declared with lower "c", changing the common to Common with capital "c" solved the issue.
