Indexing fails with CTE0100 SQLSTATE=38C90 after updating the TEMPDIR of the fast indexer.

Technote (troubleshooting)


Sometimes even after updating the keyword tempdir in the, DB2text update fails because it still looks into the old path and cannot find the expected files.


You may see similar messages in the DB2 event table:

CTE0100 A DB2 operation failed. DB2 information: "38C90" "[IBM][CLI Driver][DB2/NT] SQL0443N  Routine "*ETCHFILE" (specific name "") has returned an error SQLSTATE with diagnostic text "Cannot open d:\temp\items\60\item.A1001001A08G12C15758I6070".  SQLSTATE=38C90

Resolving the problem

  • Check that the environment variable EMSUTIL_PATH points to the correct fast indexing directory. For example:
    • On Windows, fast indexing directory is
      Use this command to check :
      set %EMSUTIL_PATH%
    • On AIX, fast indexing directory is
      Use this command to check:
      echo $EMSUTIL_PATH
  • If the path where EMSUTIL_PATH refers to is not correct:
    • Update the environment variable to point to the correct location.
    • Restart DB2.
  • In the file found under EMSUTIL_PATH, ensure that the keyword tempdir has the correct value of the new temporary directory. For example:
  • If you have multiple fast indexing directories, ensure that INDEXDOCUMENTS found under EMSUTIL_PATH is being called.
