Lotus Notes Traveler servlet fails to start

Technote (troubleshooting)

After starting the Lotus Notes Traveler task, the Traveler servlet fails to start. The URL http://<hostname>/servlet/traveler is inaccessible and a 404 HTTP error is displayed in the browser.

Additionally, when the HTTP task starts in Domino, the following error is displayed:

Xsp Initialization error - Could not get JVM environment

Upon examining the last Traveler startup attempt in the \Lotus\Domino\data\traveler\logs\NTSActivity_0.log, the following error is shown:

[timestamp] WARNING main *system NTSConfig.initConfig#170 Configuration parameter HTTPDisableJVM=1 in the notes.ini file is preventing the Lotus Notes Traveler Servlet from starting.  For Lotus Notes Traveler to be functional, please remove this parameter.  See the Domino Server information center for more information on notes.ini parameters.

Diagnosing the problem

One possible reason for this entry being added to the notes.ini file is after installing BES (Blackberry) 4.1.6 or greater (which adds this entry by default) on the same server as Lotus Notes Traveler.

Resolving the problem

To resolve the problem, use one of the following methods:

1. Update notes.ini dynamically via the Domino console

Execute the following commands from the Domino server console:

set config HTTPDisableJVM=0
restart task traveler
restart task http

2. Update notes.ini manually

a. Backup \Lotus\Domino\notes.ini
b. Open the original notes.ini in a text editor
c. Remove this line:

d. Save and close notes.ini
e. From the Domino console, execute:

restart task traveler
restart task http

After performing one of the procedures above, verify that the servlet has started successfully by navigating to http://<hostname>/servlet/traveler in a web browser.
