Problems mounting and restoring snapshots and potential data loss issues in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack.

Flash (Alert)

Abstract

This flash describes three issues that, under certain conditions, might occur when using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.x. Backups and restores of data are affected. A software fix is available.

Issue 1: A problem mounting and restoring snapshots.
This issue affects versions 5.5.1.0, 5.5.2.0, and 5.5.3.0.

Part A:
FastBack Mount and Instant Restore might fail to mount and restore snapshots. In this scenario, the FBSM8008E message is displayed. APAR IC61065 is open for this problem.

Part B:
FastBack Mount and Instant Restore might mount or restore the wrong snapshot. No message is displayed. APAR IC61065 is open for this problem.

Issue 2: Potential data loss during the cleanup process
This issue affects all versions for Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack and FilesX Xpress Restore.

The cleanup process can cause backup data loss for Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack, version 5.5.2.0 and all prior versions and releases, including FilesX Xpress Restore version 3.5.x and earlier versions.

The problem does not occur when running the cleanup process for Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack, version 5.5.3.0 or later versions. However the repositories might be affected, if you upgraded to version 5.5.3.0 (or a later version) from an earlier version of the software. APAR IC61176 is open for this problem.

Issue 3: Potential backup data loss due to cleanup process configuration
This issue affects Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack version 5.5.3.0.

A problem can occur when the cleanup process is configured to High Disk Cleanup, Low Disk Cleanup, or Minimal Disk Cleanup. The problem can cause the repository to reach capacity. When the repository reaches capacity, new data cannot be backed up.

Customers running Maximal Disk Cleanup are not affected. APAR IC61100 is open for this problem.

Issue 1 (APAR IC61065)

Issue 1 part A:

If the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes" setting is selected on the FastBack Mount system, the FastBack Mount and Instant Restore services might not mount and restore data from snapshots.

The problem can occur when FastBack Mount uses the wrong time to identify snapshots. The data was not lost, but the wrong timestamp was used to locate the snapshot. As a result, the software fails to locate the data.

For example, if on July 1st FastBack Mount tries to mount a snapshot taken on January 1st, FastBack Mount uses the current time, with the daylight saving time setting, to identify the snapshot timestamp. However, when the snapshot was taken, daylight saving time was not in effect and the setting should not be applied. The wrong snapshot timestamp is used and the snapshot is not located.

You can check the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes" setting by going to the Date and Time Properties window of the operating system. The Time Zone section is usually the area where this setting is located. For more information, see the documentation for your operating system.

Issue 1 part B:
If the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes" setting is selected on the FastBack Mount system, the FastBack Mount and Instant Restore services might mount and restore data from wrong snapshot.

Mounting and restoring the wrong snapshot can occur when FastBack Mount uses the wrong time to locate snapshots. For example, if on July 1st FastBack Mount mounts a snapshot taken on January 1st, FastBack Mount uses the current time, with the daylight saving time setting, to identify the snapshot timestamp. However, when the snapshot was taken, daylight saving time was not in effect and the setting should not be applied. The wrong snapshot timestamp is used and the wrong snapshot is mounted.

You can check this setting by going to the Date and Time Properties window of the operating system. The 'Time Zone' section is usually the area where this setting is located. For more information, see the documentation for your operating system.

Issue 2 (APAR IC61176)
This issue affects Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack version 5.5.2.0 and all prior versions and releases, including FilesX Xpress Restore version 3.5.x and all prior versions and releases. The cleanup process might delete data from a snapshot when the cleanup process copies data from old snapshots that need to be deleted. The last block of data that should be copied might not be correctly identified. If the data is not marked for copy, the data is deleted by the cleanup process.

The problem does not occur when using Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack version 5.5.3.0. However, if you upgraded to Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack version 5.5.3.0, volumes might be affected by this problem when using an earlier version of the software.

Issue 3 (APAR IC61100)
When you define cleanup parameters, you can choose one of the following cleanup settings:

  • Maximal Disk Cleanup
  • High Disk Cleanup
  • Low Disk Cleanup
  • Minimal Disk Cleanup

If you selected High Disk Cleanup, Low Disk Cleanup, or Minimal Disk Cleanup, the cleanup process can report an error. After this error occurs multiple times, free space in the repository is not available. Over time, the repeated cleanup failures resulting from this issue cause the repository to reach capacity.

To check what cleanup setting you selected, complete the following steps:
    1. From FastBack Manager, go to the Configuration tab.
    2. From General Configuration, select the Maintenance tab. The cleanup parameters are displayed.

This error does not occur if you selected Maximal Disk Cleanup.

Who is affected?
Issue 1 (APAR IC61065)
All users of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.3, 5.5.2, 5.5.1, and 5.5.0.

Issue 2 (APAR IC61176)
All users of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack version 5.5.2.0 and all prior versions and releases, including FilesX Xpress Restore version 3.5.x and all prior versions and releases.

All users of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack version 5.5.3.0 who set the following cleanup setting:
  • High Disk Cleanup
  • Low Disk Cleanup
  • Minimal Disk Cleanup

If you selected Maximal Disk Cleanup, you are not affected.

Recommendation:

Issue 1 (APAR IC61065)

The following recommendation can be used for issue 1 part A and B.

A software fix is available. Download and install Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.3.1 on all systems that have FastBack Mount installed. If you have FastBack Servers and FastBack Clients, you must install Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.3.1 on the FastBack Servers before installing it on the FastBack Clients.

For information about how to download and install the fix, see the section titled Downloading and installing Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.3.1 at the end of this document.

Important: After you install the fix, restart the system. In addition, after each daylight saving time event, either the start or end of daylight saving time, restart the FastBack Mount service.

Issue 2 (APAR IC61176)
A software fix is available. The fix prevents the error from occurring in the future, but it does not correct any errors that occurred before installing the fix. You can use the IC61176_check utility to determine whether this problem occurred.

For the software fix, you must upgrade to Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.3.1. You must install Tivoli Storage Manager 5.5.3.0 before installing Tivoli Storage Manager 5.5.3.1.

For information about installing Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.3.0, see http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v1r1/topic/com.ibm.tsm.fb.doc/FB_InstallUse/c_fast_installing.html.

For information about how to download and install Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.3.1, see the section titled Downloading and installing Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.3.1 at the end of this document.

For users of all versions of Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack and FilesX Xpress Restore, except for customers who installed Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.3.0 for the first time (and did not upgrade from an earlier version), use the IC61176_check utility.

On the FastBack Server, run the IC61176_check utility. A compressed file that includes this utility is attached to this document. The IC61176_check utility checks all snapshots to determine whether data was lost.

If data was lost for a specific snapshot, you can run a checkpoint snapshot to recover data that was lost. After you run the checkpoint snapshot, you must use the checkpoint snapshot or subsequent snapshot for data recovery. If you use snapshots taken before the checkpoint snapshot, you are using an incomplete snapshot because the IC61176_check utility reported data was lost.

To run the IC 61176 _check utility, complete the following steps:
    1. On the FastBack Server, extract the IC61176_check.exe file from IC61176_check.zip file. You can save this file to any directory on the FastBack Server.
    2. On the same system, from the Windows Start menu, select Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Right-click to select the FastBack Server service and click Stop. If you are using a FilesX Xpress Restore product version, the service is called Xpress Server.
    3. Open a command prompt window and go to the directory where you saved the IC61176_check.exe file.
    4. Enter the following command: IC61176_check > IC61176_check_results.txt
    5. From the Windows Start menu, select Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Right-click to select the FastBack Server service and click Start. If you are using a FilesX Xpress Restore product version, the service is called Xpress Server.

Note: It might take a few minutes for the IC61176_check utility to report results. For example, for a large repository allow 15 - 20 minutes for the utility to complete.

Using Notepad or another Microsoft text editor, view the IC61176_check_results.txt file. At the end of the file, there is a status message to report if any volumes are affected by the problem identified in APAR IC61176. For example, see the following example status message:
Finished checking for issues of IC61176 - Found no affected volumes

If a volume is affected, run a checkpoint snapshot of the affected volume.

To run a checkpoint snapshot, complete the following steps:
    1. From the Windows Start menu, select Programs -> Tivoli Storage Manager -> FastBack -> FastBack Manager.
    2. In the log-on window, type your user name. The default user name is admin.
    3. Type your password. The default password is admin123.
    4. Select a domain. The default domain is XPRESS-RESTORE. After you select the domain, the configuration is loaded. This process might take a few minutes.
    5. After the configuration is loaded, click Login.
    6. In FastBack Manager, from the Snapshots Monitor tab, right-click to select the snapshot; then, click Immediate Operations -> Run Checkpoint.

The checkpoint snapshot and subsequent snapshots will include all data that was marked for backup.

Issue 3 (APAR IC61100)
A software fix is available. The problem is resolved if you install Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.3.1.

Download and install Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack 5.5.3.1 on all FastBack Servers.
