The method of updating the Rational ClearCase Remote Client depends upon the shell in which you use the Rational ClearCase Remote Client:

• Eclipse IDE
• Standalone ClearCase Remote Client
• IBM products installed using IBM Installation Manager such as IBM Rational Application Developer or IBM Rational Team Concert

REGARDING CLIENT– SERVER VERSION COMPATIBILITY

Starting with Rational ClearCase 7.1.1, the Rational ClearCase Remote Client server must be either at the same version or a later version than the Rational ClearCase Remote Client version. If the server is at an earlier version than the Rational ClearCase Remote Client, you receive the following error when connecting to the server:

CRVAP0393E The server is too old for this client.

To determine the version of your Rational ClearCase Remote Client server, run cleartool –ver from the command line.

Example output from cleartool –ver:

In the output from cleartool –ver, search for the latest version of Rational ClearCase that is listed. In the above example, the latest version of Rational ClearCase is 7.1.0.2.

DETERMINING THE CLIENT VERSION

The method of determining the client version depends upon the shell in which you use Rational ClearCase Remote Client.

Eclipse SDK

1. Select Help > About Eclipse SDK.
2. Click the Rational ClearCase icon.
3. On the Build id line, find the first four segments that are separated by a period (.). These segments represent the version number.

Example: Build id:  7.1.0.02.00_2009B.D090316

In this example, the version number is 7.1.0.02

Standalone Rational ClearCase Remote Client

1. Select Help > About.
2. On the Build id line, find the first four segments that are separated by a period (.). These segments represent the version number.

Example: Build id:  7.1.0.02.00_2009B.D090311

In this example, the version number is 7.1.0.02

IBM products installed using the IBM Installation Manager

1. Start the IBM Installation Manager.
2. Select File > View Installed Packages.
3. On the Rational ClearCase Remote Client Extension line, the version number displays at the end of the Installed Packages name.

UPDATING RATIONAL CLEARCASE REMOTE CLIENT IN THE ECLIPSE IDE

When the Rational ClearCase Remote Client server is updated with a newer patch version of Rational ClearCase, the Rational ClearCase Remote Client Update Site is updated on the server.

Use the Eclipse Update feature to update the Rational ClearCase Remote Client in the Eclipse IDE.

If you are running Eclipse 3.2.x or 3.3.x, or if you are running Eclipse 3.4.0 or greater with the Classic Updater (see Notes below), take the following steps:

1. Select Help > Software Updates > Find and Install.
2. Select Search for new features to install.
3. Verify that the update site you originally specified during installation is listed and selected.
4. The new version of Rational ClearCase Remote Client displays in the search results.
5. Select Rational ClearCase Remote Client and complete the installation.
   

If you are running Eclipse 3.4.x or higher with the P2 installer:

1. Select Help > Software Updates.
2. Check that the update site you originally specified during installation is listed.
3. Click Update.
4. The new version of Rational ClearCase Remote Client displays in the search results.
5. Select the Rational ClearCase Remote Client and complete the installation.
   

Notes:

• The Classic Updater can be selected as the default update method by modifying the IDE's preference setting:

1. Window > Preferences.
2. Select General > Capabilities.
3. Select Classic Update.

• The Classic Updater is required for installation on UNIX and Linux platforms. If you begin an installation on UNIX or Linux with the P2 installer, you will be prompted to switch to the Classic Updater.

UPDATING THE STANDALONE RATIONAL CLEARCASE REMOTE CLIENT

Use the IBM Installation Manager to update the standalone Rational ClearCase Remote Client. You can update from the global repository at download.boulder.ibm.com, or from a site repository created by your system administrator, or from a temporary local repository that you create.


To update directly from download.boulder.ibm.com:

1. Run the IBM Installation Manager.
2. Click Update.
3. From the available versions of the Rational ClearCase Remote Client, select the version that is compatible with the Rational ClearCase Remote Client server.
4. Install the Rational ClearCase Remote Client.
   

To update from a site repository created by your system administrator:

1. Run the IBM Installation Manager.
2. Select File > Preferences
3. Add the site repository if it is not already listed and selected. If necessary, contact your administrator for the URL or the file path to the repository.
4. Click OK.
5. Click Update.
6. From the available versions of the Rational ClearCase Remote Client, select the version that is compatible with the Rational ClearCase Remote Client server.
7. Install Rational ClearCase Remote Client.
   

To update from a temporary local repository that you create:

1. Navigate to the appropriate ClearCase Patch Download webpage.
   Review technote 1265307: Available iFixes and Fix Packs for ClearCase Family 7.x for more details.
2. Follow the instructions for creating a temporary local repository, using the zip file ccrc.zip.
3. Run the IBM Installation Manager.
4. Select File > Preferences.
5. Click Add Repository.
6. Enter the location of the temporary repository and click OK.
7. Verify that the temporary repository is listed and selected, then click OK.
8. Click Update.
9. From the available versions of the Rational ClearCase Remote Client, select the version that is compatible with the Rational ClearCase Remote Client server.
10. Install the Rational ClearCase Remote Client.
    

UPDATING RATIONAL CLEARCASE REMOTE CLIENT IN OTHER IBM PRODUCTS INSTALLED USING INSTALLATION MANAGER

IMPORTANT: If you had previously installed the Rational ClearCase Remote Client into the Rational Software Delivery Platform or Rational Team Concert using the Eclipse update manager or the P2 installer, uninstall this version of Rational ClearCase Remote Client first. To provide a more reliable and consistent installation, use the IBM Installation Manager to install Rational ClearCase Remote Client into these products.

Use the IBM Installation Manager to update the Rational ClearCase Remote Client when it has been installed into the Rational Software Delivery Platform or Rational Team Concert. To do this, use the IBM Installation Manager offering called the Rational ClearCase Remote Client Extension. You can update from the global repository at download.boulder.ibm.com, or from a site repository created by your system administrator, or from a temporary local repository that you create.


To update directly from download.boulder.ibm.com:

1. Run the IBM Installation Manager.
2. Click Update.
