Client restore uses copy pool volume instead of primary pool

Problem

A Tivoli Storage Manager client restore/retrieve operation is initiated and data is restored using volumes from the copy storage pool instead of the primary storage pool.

Cause

Resolving The Problem

There are multiple cases in which the Tivoli Storage Manager server will choose to restore from a copy storage pool instead of the primary storage pool :

  • Primary storage pool access is unavailable
  • Primary storage pool volume access is unavailable or damaged
  • Primary copy of object being restored/retrieved is damaged
Under any of the above conditions, the Tivoli Storage Manager server will select volumes from a copy storage pool to restore/retrieve the object. In addition to these conditions, the server will also restore/retrieve from a copy storage pool when the following two conditions are met :
  • Copy pool volume access is readwrite or readonly (not offsite or unavailable)
  • Object to be restored/retrieve is stored on less volumes in the copy storage pool than the primary
For example, if object A is stored on TAPE1 and TAPE2 (object spans 2 volumes) in the primary storage pool and is stored on TAPE3 (a single tape) in the copy storage pool, and all tapes are available, the Tivoli Storage Manager server will restore/retrieve using TAPE3 (volume from the copy storage pool) because there are less volumes to mount. In the case where the TAPE3 volume access is set to OFFSITE, then the server would select TAPE1 and TAPE2 for the restore/retrieve operation. To prevent TSM from using the volumes in the copy storage pool, set the copy storage pool volume(s) access to OFFSITE.
