About migrating a Portal project to a newer version of WebSphere Portal

Question & Answer

Question

What is the procedure to migrate a Portal project developed in IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software against a specific version of WebSphere Portal to a newer version of WebSphere Portal?

Cause

Rational Application Developer does not have any automated tooling to migrate Portal projects to newer versions of WebSphere Portal.

Answer

Rational Application Developer cannot migrate a Portal project targeting WebSphere Portal v6.0 to WebSphere Portal v6.1. It is not sufficient to simply change the "Targeted Runtime" under the project's Properties window.

This restriction should not be confused with the ability to migrate Portal projects from one version of Rational Application Developer to another and targeting the same version of Portal, nor the migration of portlet projects.

Migrating to a newer version of WebSphere Portal should be done according to the WebSphere Portal InfoCenter (see related URLs). Once the WebSphere Portal runtime has been migrated, the Portal configuration can be imported into Rational Application Developer. See the "Importing a Portal site" under Related URLs for more information.
