IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition Support for 64-bit Windows

Question & Answer

Question

Does IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition support 64-bit Windows?

Cause

Before Version 8.4.1 Fix Pack 1, IBM Content Manager did not support the 64-bit Windows operating systems.

Answer

IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition Version 8.4.1 Fix Pack 1 or later release now supports Windows Server 2003 and 2008 x64 Editions on x86-64 hardware (AMD64/EM64T). The following matrix indicates the extent of the support on the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms:

KNOWN CONSTRAINTS AND LIMITATIONS

IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition Version 8.4.3 and its Fix Packs

The IBM Content Manager can run as 64-bit applications in 64-bit Windows environment.

64-bit DB2 with 64-bit database instances are fully supported. However, CM 8.4.3 support only 64-bit Oracle 11g R2 with a 64-bit database instance in a 64-bit Windows server. 64-bit Oracle 10g is not supported in a 64-bit Windows environment.

64-bit WebSphere Application Server can be used for the resource manager and Content Manager Web Services.

Content Manager eClient is supported when it runs under 32-bit WebSphere Application Server on 64-bit Windows. eClient does not support in 64-bit WebSphere Application Server.

In this release, IBM Content Manager Client for Windows support 64-bit Windows 7. The 64-bit Windows 8 support requires IBM Content Manager Client Version 8.4.3 Fix Pack 3 or later fix pack. but IBM Content Manager Client for Windows still runs as a 32-bit application in 64-bit Windows environment, and requires one of the following database connection software programs to be installed:

  • DB2 RTC v9.5 (32-bit) or later
  • DB2 Connect Personal Edition v9.5 (32-bit) or later
  • Oracle 11g R2 Client 11.2.0.3 (32-bit) or later

The Java Viewer Toolkit is supported in 32 and 64-bit Windows, unless you are using a document engine that requires native libraries. This includes the CMBMSTechInsoEngine that is used for Office format documents, like MS Word, MS Excel. If you are using this engine, you may only use a 32-bit JVM on 64-bit Windows.

For details about supported Windows operating systems and Java versions, see the following technote:

Requirements for IBM Content Manager Version 8.4.3

IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition Version 8.4.2 and its Fix Packs

The IBM Content Manager must still run as 32-bit applications in 64-bit Windows environment.

64-bit DB2 with 64-bit database instances is supported, but DB2 runtime library must be configured to use 32-bit libraries. 64-bit Oracle is not supported. This stipulation is due to limitations in Oracle 10g on Windows that do not allow 32-bit applications to run under 64-bit Oracle.

Starting in CM 8.4.2 Fix Pack 2, The resource manager and Content Manager Web Services support 64-bit WebSphere Application Server.

The eClient is supported when running under 32-bit WebSphere Application Server on 64-bit Windows. eClient does not support in 64-bit WebSphere Application Server.

The IBM Content Manager Client for Windows is supported on 64-bit Windows Server 2003 & 2008.

Requirements for IBM Content Manager Version 8.4.2

IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition Version 8.4.1 Fix Pack 1

The IBM Content Manager must still run as 32-bit applications in Windows Server 2003 and 2008 x64 Editions on x86-64 hardware (AMD64/EM64T) for DB2 Version 9.1 Fix Pack 6 or later. This statement implies that 32-bit WebSphere Application Server must be used to run the resource manager, eClient, and Content Manager Web Services. That is, resource manager, eClient, and Web Services are not supported in 64-bit WebSphere Application Server. However, 64-bit DB2 with 64-bit database instances is supported, but DB2 runtime library must use 32-bit. This support is consistent with current support on other operating systems, such as AIX. This support also means that the IBM Content Manager system administration client must be run with a 32-bit Java Virtual Machine.

The eClient is supported when running under 32-bit WebSphere Application Server on 64-bit Windows. It is only supported for accessing IBM Content Manager content servers. The Federated, OnDemand, ImagePlus, and IBM Content Manager for iSeries connectors are not supported on 64-bit Windows.

Oracle is not supported. This stipulation is due to limitations in Oracle 10g on Windows that do not allow 32-bit applications to run under 64-bit Oracle.

Information Integrator for Content federation is not supported on 64-bit Windows. This stipulation includes the DB2 Information Integrator for Content system administration database and client. It also includes the Federated connector.

The IBM Content Manager Client for Windows is not supported on 64-bit Windows. The Java viewer is also not supported. This includes viewer-related APIs, such as the CMBDocumentServices bean. These APIs provide document conversion, document manipulation, and annotation services, and are not supported on 64-bit Windows.

Starting in Version 8.4.1 Fix Pack 1, the IBM Content Manager application programming interface (IBM Content Manager connector) is supported under a 64-bit Java Virtual Machine. The JavaBeans APIs are also supported under a 64-bit Java Virtual Machine for accessing IBM Content Manager servers. This stipulation does not include the viewer-related APIs, such as the CMBDocumentServices bean, as mentioned previously. This stipulation implies that applications that are written by using these APIs are supported when they run under the 64-bit WebSphere Application Server. However, only those previously mentioned APIs themselves are supported by IBM Content Manager to run under the 64-bit WebSphere Application Server. For example, the resource manager, eClient, and Content Manager Web Services applications are not supported under 64-bit WebSphere Application Server.

If you are using Windows 2008 with operating system security turned on (the default), then you must apply APAR JR32152 to DB2 Version 9.1 Fix Pack 6. Alternatively, you can apply Fix Pack 8, which includes this fix.

For further details about supported Windows operating systems and Java versions, see the following technote:

Requirements for IBM Content Manager Version 8.4.1 Fix Pack 1

IMPORTANT: Support of 64-bit Windows applies only to new installations of IBM Content Manager. Windows does not support an upgrade of a 32-bit operating system to 64-bit. Instead, you must install a completely new 64-bit Windows operating system. Therefore, an existing IBM Content Manager installation does not support upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows.

Because IBM Content Manager Version 8.4.1 did not support 64-bit Windows, special steps are required to install the Content Manager software. For details, see the IBM Content Manager Version 8.4.1 Fix Pack 1 readme:
