"Invalid 'N' parameter specified" when launching Consolidator

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

User launches Consolidator. User receives error message.

Symptom

Error

Invalid 'N' parameter specified. Ensure that a FRANGO Server Installation exist under <pathname>
[OK]

Cause

The 'N' parameter is used when deploying Consolidor via a 'network' (as opposed to deploying the Consolidator client locally on each individual client device).

  • In other words, it is used when the customer has chosen to perform a 'server' installation (as opposed to choosing a 'local' installation) during the Consolidator installation wizard.

The error is caused when the value specified inside the shortcut link (which the end user used to launch Consolidator) is invalid.

There are several possibilities for this:
  • Scenario #1 - The value specified is incorrect
  • Scenario #2 - The customer is trying to launch the Consolidator client locally (installed on the end user's C: drive) but (erroneously) has a "N=" parameter specified in the shortcut
    • You should only use the "N=" parameter when deploying the client via a 'server' (network) installation, NOT when using a standard 'local' installation/configuration.

Resolving the problem

Scenario #1

  1. Right-click on the icon (that the user used to launch Consolidator) and choose "properties"
  2. Inside the 'Target' section, modify the shortcut
  3. Modify the value specified for "N=" to the correct location (where your network install of Consolidator is located). TIP: This will be located on your file server.

Scenario #2

If you have installed the Consolidator client via the "local" option, then you should *not* use an "n=..." parameter.

  1. Right-click on the icon (that the user used to launch Consolidator) and choose "properties"
  2. Inside the 'Target' section, modify the shortcut
  3. Delete the "N=xxxxxx" section

In other words, the shortcut should now look similar to the following:
    C:\FRANGOW\FRANGO.Exe -cC:\FRANGOW\config.fpw d=X:\frango\live
