An Error occurred while converting the MS Excel workbook into XML format : Unspecified Error

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Opening a TM1 websheet results in an error. These are often sheets with Action Buttons, but not always.

Symptom

An Error occurred while converting the MS Excel workbook into XML format : Unspecified Error

Resolving the problem

Customers have found several solutions for this error:

1) The tm1xl.ocx/tm1prc.dll needed to be registered. To register these files, enter the following line at a command prompt from the Cognos (or Applix for older versions) install directory bin folder: Regsvr32.exe tm1prc.dll tm1xl.ocx

If you accepted the default installation location during installation, the path to the Cognos (or Applix) install directory bin is: C:\Program Files\Cognos\TM1\bin or C:\Program Files\Applix\bin.

2) Another customer needed to run a command line on the web server machine to enable 32 bit apps to run on a 64 bit machine. By default, the IIS v6 webserver with 64 bit Windows Server 2003 for x64 runs in 64 bit mode. TM1Web V9.1.4 FP1 (and older versions) and ASP.NET V1.1 are 32-bit applications, thus the webserver to be used (IIS V6) must be switched from 64-bit into 32-bit mode using the following DOS command:
cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1

3) Another customer needed to apply the latest Excel 2003 updates/hotfixes in order to support the TM1 Action Buttons.

4) This can also be caused by having Excel 64-bit installed on th web server. Uninstall and install the 32-bit version of Excel.
