How to automate display of portal pages and tabs based on security

Troubleshooting


Problem

This document describes the steps to automate the display of portal pages and tabs so that new users automatically see specific portal pages/tabs when logging on the portal. The user does not need to select the tabs/pages, they will automatically be assigned based on the user groups to which the user belongs.

Resolving The Problem

Steps

  1. Assign all the portal tabs to the default user profile under: Tools > Directory > click on the 'Users, Groups and Roles' tab > Click on the 'Cognos' namespace > click on the 'Edit Default User Profile' button > click on the 'Portal Tabs' tab.
  2. Include all possible tabs for each user. Example: Home, Public Folders, User's personal folders, Direct Reports, Regulatory Services, Retail Markets, Wholesale & Institutional Markets.
    Assign security permissions to the folder storing the tabs so that users are allowed to read, execute and traverse the location where tabs are stored, but not allowed to write or set policy.
  3. Assign security permissions to the tabs. Example: Regulatory Services users can Read, Execute and Traverse the Regulatory Services tab but are not able to write or set policy. Retail Markets users can Read, Execute and Traverse the Retail Markets tab but are not able to write or set policy. etc.
  4. When logging in as a new user (that has never been added previously to the content store/never logged in, the portal tabs will all show up. The tabs that the user does not have permission to access will appear with a red cross.


Note:
  • It is possible to hide tabs to which users do not have access permission by changing the hideInaccessibleTabs property of the ..<ROOT_C8>\templates\ps\portal\system.xml file will hide the tabs to which users to not have access permissions. Before making changes, backup the system.xml file. For more on this, please refer to the Adminstration and Security Guide.
