User is prompted to download cognos.cgi when attempting to access the Cognos portal

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

When attempting to access the Cognos Connection portal, the user is prompted to download the cognos.cgi file instead of the portal page being displayed.
The gateway is configured on the Apache web server, or IBM HTTP Server.

Cause

The 'ScriptAlias' directory was not placed before the 'Alias' directives within the Apache or IBM HTTP Server's httpd.conf file.

Environment

Apache HTTP Server
IBM HTTP Server

Resolving the problem

Edit the httpd.conf file in the <apache_install_dir>/conf directory and ensure that the 'ScriptAlias' directive is placed before the 'Alias' directives.
Steps:

  1. Open the httpd.conf file in the <webserver_install_dir>/conf directory in edit mode.
  2. Verify that the 'ScriptAlias' directive is placed before the 'Alias' directives. For example:
  3. ScriptAlias /ibmcognos/cgi-bin /opt/ibm/cognos/c10/cgi-bin
    Alias /ibmcognos/help /opt/ibm/cognos/c10/webcontent/documentation
    Alias /ibmcognos /opt/ibm/cognos/c10/webcontent
  4. Restart the web server after making your changes.
