"SMTP Protocol Returned a Permanent Error 550 Bad SPF RECORD(#5.7.1)"

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem

Lotus Notes email users receive a Delivery Failure report reporting the following message:

"Error transferring to xxx.xxx.com; SMTP Protocol Returned a Permanent Error 550 Bad SPF RECORD(#5.7.1)"

Symptom

Delivery Failure Report received in the Lotus Notes inbox. Email is being rejected by the recipient's domain (example: acme.com) because the sender cannot be verified.

Cause

The Sender Policy Framework (SPF) is an open standard specifying a technical method to prevent sender address forgery. The current version of SPF, SPFv1 or SPF Classic, protects the envelope sender address, which is used for the delivery of messages.

The email recipient must configure Sender Policy Framework in her DNS. In this scenario, an SPF record has not been established for the sender's domain. Thus, the mail is being rejected by the recipient's domain because the sender cannot be verified.

Resolving the problem

To resolve the issue, create an SPF for the sender's domain.

For more information on this topic, read www.openspf.org.

This site also allows the user to establish an SPF record.
