Abstract

Configuring devices on Windows Server 2008 Server Core with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server version 5.5.1.1 and later

Content

Windows Server 2008 Server Core is supported with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager version 5.5.1.1 and later.

Microsoft hotfix requirement for Windows Server 2008 Server Core:

  • To use a storage device such as a tape drive, an optical drive, or a library, Microsoft Hotfix 953390 is required.

On Windows Server 2008 Server Core, Device Manager is not available for configuring a device for the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver. The Tivoli Storage Manager server provides two server commands--QUERY OSDEVICES and CHANGE DEVDRIVER to help you achieve this task.

Follow these steps to configure a device for the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver on Windows Server 2008 Server Core. The information here does not apply to devices that are controlled by the IBM device driver.

1. Log on to the system where the Tivoli Storage Manager server is installed. Device configuration must be performed on the system where the Tivoli Storage Manager server is installed.

2. Run the Query OSDEVices command. You will see output similar to the following:

3. Your device may have automatically been configured by the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver when the driver is installed if the native driver is not already on the system. If your device is already configured, the Device column will show the Tivoli Storage Manager device name such as mt6.0.0.5 and the Driver column will show TSM. You will not have to perform further steps.

4. If your device has not been configured by the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver, the Device column may show a native device name such as Tape4 or may display nothing. You will need to run the CHANGE DEVDRIVER to configure the device for use with the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver.

5. The CHANGE DEVDRIVER command has the following syntax:
CHange DEVDRiver VENDorid="vendor id" PRODuctid="product id"
The vendor ID and the product ID can be obtained from the Query OSDEVices output.
    Example:

    CH DEVDR VEND="HP" PROD="Ultrium 3-SCSI"

You will see output similar to the following:

6. Depending on the HBA driver, the new name may show as <unknown>. Rerun the Q OSDEV command to get the new Tivoli Storage Manager device name.
