Problem(Abstract)

This technote provides you with information about IBM® Rational® ClearCase® (CC) and why switching the VOB/view server from Atria to FLEXlm licensing can result in the error Unable to contact license server on host "": specified host is not a license server. being reported from the vob_server and view_server processes.

Symptom

The following error is reported from the vob_server and view_server processes after being switched from Atria to FLEXlm licensing:

Unable to contact license server on host "":
specified host is not a license server.



Cause

This is due to the fact that running view and VOB server processes retain the old license server location. This is expected behavior as the ClearCase VOB and view server needs to be restarted after switching from ATRIA to FLEXlm licensing.


Resolving the problem

Stop ClearCase on the servers before switching to the FLEXlm licensing solution. This will make sure that all processes have been stopped.

Switch license type should be done upon installation or is strongly recommended to do it before starting ClearCase. If the license type is switched while there are active view server processes, the view server will fail upon checking out a license from the newly selected license type.
In this case, either manually stop view server process or stop and restart ClearCase to solve the problem.
