InfoSphere Information Server console or InfoSphere DataStage: Cannot log in to the domain server

Troubleshooting

Problem

You are unable to login to the domain server from the IBM InfoSphere Information Server console or from IBM InfoSphere DataStage.

Symptom

You receive errors that InfoSphere Information Server or InfoSphere DataStage is unable to connect to the server.

Resolving The Problem

If you receive errors that InfoSphere Information Server or InfoSphere DataStage are unable to connect to the server:

1. Open a Web browser on your client machine from where you are experiencing the connection problems.

2. Open the following URL: http://server_name:port/RegistrationServlet/registration.

For InfoSphere Information Server 8.1, replace the [server_name] and [port] by the server name and port that you are providing in the login window.

For a clustered environment in InfoSphere Information Server 8.5, replace the [server_name] and [port] associated with the front-end dispatcher. The front-end dispatcher is typically a Web server that has the WebSphere Application Server WLM plug-in installed or a load balancer.

3. For InfoSphere Information Server 8.1, you should receive a page with the following content:
#Mon Dec 04 20:52:24 CET 2006 java.naming.factory.initial=com.ibm.websphere.naming.WsnInitialContextFactory java.naming.provider.url=iiop\://raptor\:2811 java.naming.factory.object=com.ibm.ws.naming

For a clustered environment in InfoSphere Information Server 8.5, you should receive a page with the following content:
#Thu Sep 23 09:22:04 PDT 2010
java.naming.factory.initial=com.ibm.websphere.naming.WsnInitialContextFactory
java.naming.provider.url=corbaloc\:\:raptor1\:9810,\:raptor2\:9810,\:raptor3\:9810
java.naming.factory.url.pkgs=com.ibm.ws.naming\:org.jnp.interfaces
java.naming.factory.object=com.ibm.ws.naming

If you do not receive this information, it means that you are not talking to a valid domain server or that you are using an improper port number.

4. For InfoSphere Information Server 8.1, check the hostname of the java.naming.provider.url (raptor in the example above) and see if this hostname (as is, without any extra domain information) is reachable from your client computer.

For a clustered environment in InfoSphere Information Server 8.5, check if the [server_name] and [port] is reachable. This is the front-end dispatcher hostname and port. Check that the hostnames listed in the java.naming.provider.url (raptor1, raptor2 and raptor3) are also reachable from the front-end dispatcher system.

If you cannot reach the hostname, do the following.

For InfoSphere Information Server 8.1: Talk to the IBM® WebSphere® Application Server administrator suggesting that the WebSphere Application Server configuration must be changed.
The hostname returned in the java.naming.provider.url is coming from the C:/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/profiles/[WebSphere Application Server profile]/config/cells/[cell name]/nodes/[node name]/serverindex.xml WebSphere Application Server configuration file. WebSphere Application Server must be stopped and all hostnames present in this file must be changed to a hostname that is reachable from all client machines.

For a clustered environment in InfoSphere Information Server 8.5: Talk to the IBM® WebSphere® Application Server administrator suggesting that the front-end dispatcher is not reachable from the client system or that the WebSphere Application Server cluster members (raptor1, raptor2 and raptor3 in the above example) are not reachable from the front-end dispatcher system.

If you can ping the hostname without any domain information, but the Information Server clients can not connect, ensure that there is no firewall between the client and server machine that will prevent bi-directional communication.
