The sendmail command fails after a z/OS upgrade

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempts to use the sendmail client command fail after upgrading to a new z/OS release.

Symptom

The following message is returned and the sendmail command terminates:
Unable to drop non-root set-user-id privileges

Cause

The sendmail command must run under the authority of the userid specified by the confDEF_USER_ID value in the sendmail.cf file. This ID must be defined with the appropriate SAF (RACF) authorities. While this may have been defined properly for the earlier release, the install process for a new release will have the userid of the installer defined as the owner of the file.

Resolving The Problem

Perform the steps listed in Configuring Security Server (RACF or equivalent) items again, specifically the chown and chmod commands.

NOTE: The full sendmail function will no longer be delivered starting with z/OS 2.3. You will either need to stop using this function or convert to the sendmail bridge. APAR PI71175 rolls this replacement back to z/OS 2.1 and 2.2 (apply the PTFs for PI85990 as well).
