Error: SQL8001N DB2 connect processing failed, a valid product license was not
found

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote explains how to resolve an error: "SQL8001N DB2 connect processing failed," that can occur when testing CLI and ODBC connections in IBM® Rational® TestManager (TM) against an IBM DB2® back-end database from client to server.

Symptom

When testing the connection of a DB2 database from client to server, you will get the following error message:

    CLI connection failed.
SQL8001N DB2 connect processing failed, a valid product license was not found.  SQLSTATE=42968
    IBM CLI Driver
    ODBC connection failed.
SQL8001N DB2 connect processing failed, a valid product license was not found.  SQLSTATE=42968

Resolving The Problem

The error references that the DB2 license key has expired. To resolve this issue, you will need to do the following:

  1. Locate your license key named db2exp.lic(server) or db2exp_u.lic(user) from the install packages DB2\EXP\image\db2\license directory.
  2. Once have located this DB2 license key file, simply double-click on it. You will see a DOS window open and close promptly.
