Error: Containing directory could not be set for directory shortcut "IBM Installation Manager"

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

You install or uninstall IBM Installation Manager. You receive the error:
Containing directory could not be set for directory shortcut "IBM Installation Manager".

Symptom

The error message is recorded in the log file.

An additional warning message is logged:
Directory /usr/share/desktop-directories must be writable, but is not.

Cause

The specified directory is not writable.

Resolving the problem

To work around this issue:

1. Verify that the /usr/share/desktop-directories directory is writable.
2. Before you start Installation Manager, redirect the shortcut creation to a different folder.

On Linux, UNIX, IBM i, and z/OS, define the $XDG_DATA_HOME and the XDG_CONFIG_HOME environment variables with a value that points to a writable directory.

For example:

$export XDG_DATA_HOME=/var/shortcuts
$export XDG_CONFIG_HOME=/var/shortcuts

On Windows, define the StartMenuPrograms system property with a value that points to a writable directory.

For example:

-DStartMenuPrograms=c:\shortcuts
