Using the WebSphere MQ Information Center on Windows platforms when UAC is enabled

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

On Windows platforms that have User Access Control (UAC) enabled, Administrator authority is needed to start the WebSphere MQ Information Center. Users who are not in the Administrators group do not have authority to start the Information Center.

Symptom

When trying to start the WebSphere MQ Information Center on a Windows platform with UAC enabled, from an user who is not in the Administrators group, a Windows prompt is displayed requesting an Administrator password.

Cause

On Windows platforms that have User Access Control (UAC) enabled, Administrator authority is needed to start the WebSphere MQ Information Center.

Environment

Windows platforms with UAC enabled

Resolving the problem

The System Administrator (Administrator) must start the Information Center in 'Information Center' mode on a server machine with a designated port. A user who is not in the Administrators group can then open a web browser, enter the appropriate address, and then use the Information Center as normal.

The following instructions are based on the readme_informationcenter file on the Windows Documentation CD. Note that the server machine IP address may need to be added to the trusted sites in Internet Options on the client machine.

Viewing the information center in Information Center mode

In Information Center mode, the information center is available from other machines on the same network as the machine on which the help system is running.

When the information center is launched in Information Center mode, the IBM Eclipse Help System's embedded web application server uses port 8888, unless the installation wizard detected that port was already in use by another application, in which case it uses the port that was specified when the help system was installed. A new browser tab or window is not automatically opened.

When you launch the information center in Information Center mode from the Start Menu, a Windows service is started. You can use this service to make the information center available across a network: when the service is started, you do not need to be logged into the machine that is running the help system.

Launching the information center in Information Center mode

As the Administrator, launch the information center in Information Center mode from the Start Menu select Start > All Programs > IBM WebSphere 7.0.0 Information Center > Start Information Center.

Alternatively, from an elevated command prompt navigate to <installation directory>\service and execute the following command:

IEHSService -start

In Information Center mode, the information center is available from the local machine at the following URL: http://127.0.0.1: /help/index.jsp

For example, if the default port is used, the URL is http://127.0.0.1:8888/help/index.jsp.

In Information Center mode, the information center is available from other machines on the same network as the machine on which the information center is running, at the following URL:

http://<ip address>:<port>/help/index.jsp

Where <ip address> is the IP address of the machine on which the information center is running.

Stopping the information center in Information Center mode

To stop the information center when it is running in Information Center mode, as the Administrator select Start > All Programs > IBM WebSphere 7.0.0 Information Center > Stop Information Center.

Alternatively, from an elevated command prompt navigate to <installation directory>\service and execute the following command:

IEHSService -stop
