Troubleshooting
Problem
Lowering the RETVER value in an archive copy group or updating a node to belong to a new domain with an archive copygroup RETVER value lower than the original does not result in the expiration of eligible archive objects.
Symptom
Archive object are not expired from the server as expected.
Cause
The archive copy group has a RETMIN value that is keeping objects from being expired even though the RETVER period has elapsed. The retain minimum (RETMIN) value is an option in the archive copy group to specify a minimum number of days objects must be retained. This value will override a lower RETVER copygroup value.
Environment
Tivoli Storage Manager server with archive objects and RETMIN values specified in archive copy groups.
Diagnosing The Problem
Use the query copygroup command with the type=archive option to review the active archive copy groups and evaluate the RETVER and RETMIN values.
Resolving The Problem
Adjust the RETVER and RETMIN values to achieve the desired data retention. If objects need to be expired from the Tivoli Storage Manager server based upon an updated (lower) RETVER value then make sure that a RETMIN value higher than the desired RETVER value is not set. Use the update copygroup command with RETMIN=0 (or some value less than the RETVER) to ensure that objects can be expired from the Tivoli Storage Manager Server as expected.
It is important to note that the RETMIN value is ignored when the RETINIT is set to "creation" (which is the default value).
