Error: Windows could not start the Web Platform, HTTP server on Local Computer

Troubleshooting

Problem

When IBM® Rational® Web Platform (RWP) is trying to start on Microsoft® Windows®. the following error occurs: "Windows could not start the Web Platform, HTTP server on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to the service-specific error code 1."

Cause

The Rational Web Platform fails to start, and the following error is found in the Windows (event viewer) system log:

The Rational Web Platform, HTTP server service terminated with service-specific error 1.

The Windows (event viewer) application log contains the following errors:

The Apache service named  reported the following error:

>>> no listening sockets available, shutting down.

Attempting to start the service manually results in the following error:

Windows could not start the Rational Web Platform, HTTP server on Local Computer.  For more information, review the System Event Log.  If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the vendor, and refer to service specific error code 1.

The port chosen for the RWP is already in use, most likely due to another Web server that is listening on port 80.

Resolving The Problem

To resolve the problem:

  1. Close or Stop the program which is using port 80 on the RequisiteWeb server (for example, IIS).
  2. Configure Rational Web Process to use a different port number. If you are using verison 2003.06.xx, refer to technote 1143025, and if you are using version 7.x, refer to technote 1258537 for more details.
