Tar @LongLink errors untarring TADDM 7.1 install files on AIX 5.3

Technote (FAQ)

Question

Attempts to use the AIX "tar" command or even "pax" may return @Longlink errors
and fail to extract the installation images.

Cause

There are three TADDM for AIX install images provided with the CCMDB 7.1 product:
Part Number Image Name
C1548ML TADDM_V710_1of3_AIX.tar
C161HML TADDM_V710_2of3_AIX.tar
C161IML TADDM_V710_3of3_AIX.tar
Errors look like these:
././@LongLink
TADDM/extensions/nls/com/ibm/cdb/topomgr/extension/gui/messages/ModelExt
ensionUIResources_pt_BR.prop
pax: ././@LongLink : 0511-646 The filetype is unknown.
././@LongLink
TADDM/extensions/nls/com/ibm/cdb/topomgr/extension/gui/messages/ModelExt
ensionUIResources_ru.propert
pax: ././@LongLink : 051

Tar and pax cannot handle a symbolic link ( the 'link name') exceeding 100 bytes

Answer

Download, install and use GNU tar, version 1.14 or later. The GNU tar can be downloaded from

the Free Software Directory under ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/tar/
It must be installed as the default tar utility in the path (the default install location for GNU tar is /usr/local/bin).
