What's new in release 8.0.1 of Lotus Notes/Domino® and Lotus® Domino® Web Access?
The information below originated in the Notes/Domino 8.0.1 Release Notes.
 
Answer
The following list represents an overview of the new features that are available in IBM Lotus Notes and IBM Lotus Domino 8.0.1. For more comprehensive information about new features, please refer to the Documentation Updates chapter of these release notes, and to the IBM Lotus Domino and Notes Information Center at http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/domhelp/v8r0/index.jsp.
Client

User Interface (UI)
  • Improved failover support
  • Ability to drag-and-drop e-mail to the Calendar, To Do, or Mail bookmark
  • Ability to drag-and-drop text between Notes and browsers (Notes embedded browser, Firefox, Internet Explorer) using left-click, and drag-and-drop text between Notes and Microsoft Word documents using right-click.
  • Support for the "Open in New Window" in your bookmarks
  • Search on selected text from the right-click menu
  • Language Tag selector has been added to the Notes toolbar (View -> Toolbar -> Language)
  • Type-to-find feature in a docked Open List; click the binoculars icon at the top of the list, and then type in the text for the bookmark you want to find


Calendar and Scheduling
  • Additional regional preference settings for the Calendar date footer
  • "Dual time zone" availability
  • New warning displayed when deleting non-meeting Calendar entries
  • Updated "To Do" visual design
  • Support for a Secondary Time Zone in the "Preferences" dialog


Mail
  • Mail quota and utilization data displayed in navigator


Contacts
  • Ability for users to delete entries from the Recent Contacts view
  • Ability for users to "promote" a contact from Recent Contacts to "My Contacts" (personal address book)


Sametime
  • Expanded platform support: AIX and Solaris
  • Microsoft Office Integration:
  • New installation packaging, so that installation of Office Integration components is handled through the Sametime client's additional component install mechanisms, including both mandatory-push and several variations of user-selected options
  • Support for Microsoft Office/Outlook 2007
  • Improved caching/performance
  • Updates to the following SDKs
  • Sametime Helper Toolkit: Allows developers to integrate Sametime into their Windows applications
  • Sametime Connect APIs Toolkit: New extensible alerts API
  • Sametime Database and Directory Access Toolkit: New chat logging sample and documentation for Linux
  • Sametime Community Server Toolkit, Sametime Telephony Conferencing Service Provider Interface (TCSPI) Toolkit, and Sametime Java Toolkit : Bug fixes
  • Sametime Mobile platform updates: Nokia E-Series, Sony Ericsson devices, Windows Mobile 6 devices
  • Calendar presence/access Microsoft Office Integration enhancements and performance improvements
  • Support for Lotus Domino 8, application sharing from AIX/Solaris clients
  • Sametime server in virtual environments – VMware ESX is now officially supported, however, testing was performed with the advanced clustering features of VMware ESX (VMware DRS, HA and Vmotion) disabled.
  • Enhanced administration, policies for application, concurrent user license monitoring


Domino Blog template
  • Additional rich text options for entries from Web Administrator client
  • Notes client UI upgrade
  • Improved attachment handling
  • Improved tagging capability


My Widgets
  • New My Widgets sidebar feature is installed automatically with Notes install. For more information, see "Introducing Notes My Widgets" in these release notes
  • New LIve Text preference panel for controlling Live Text display in Notes
  • New Widgets preference panel for controlling catalog access and My Widgets toolbar and sidebar display
  • New PLUGIN_CUSTOMIZATION.INI file settings available for controlling My Widgets feature access and widget catalog access


IBM Lotus Symphony
  • Support for sending Lotus Symphony documents as Notes mail attachments


Notes Client on Linux
  • Performance enhancements, including better text rendering and bitmap-related processing
  • Updated File dialogs that include new, sortable columns
  • Print Preview has been updated to address issues with calculating correct page breaks, and with the number of pages rendered


Platforms
  • Microsoft Vista UAC is supported; see "Notes and Domino 8.0.1 platforms and system requirements" in these release notes for more information
  • The Notes Client (Standard configuration) is now supported on Citrix Presentation Server 4.5, on Windows 2003 server, using ICA clients, only with the Multi-User install option of the "Notes Client Only" Standard client install package.



Domino Designer

User Interface (UI)
  • Ability to enable or disable the in-line spell check feature on a per field basis. For more information about using this feature, see "In-line spell checking assigned on per field basis" in the Documentation Updates section of these release notes.


Programming and Scripting Languages
  • Updates made to Web services Java and LotusScript classes


Composite Applications
  • Access to Application pages can be made available based on user roles
  • Miscellaneous user improvements have been made including:
  • Look of application tabs has been redesigned
  • Deployment improvements in the form of relative links to components have been made including:
  • Relative links to NSF components (calculated at runtime via @Formulas)
  • Relative links to Eclipse components via lists/white lists
  • Notes documents can be opened on pages together with other components
  • New preconfigured components for composite applications have been added to the Component Library. These include the following:
  • Notes Recent Collaborations View
  • Notes Sidecalendar View:
  • Embedded browser component
  • New LotusScript APIs and @Formulas have been added to get composite application context information in NSF components
  • Composite Application Editor changes and improvements have been made including the following
  • Undo of last edit
  • More control over user interface display settings for components
  • The ability to scope properties and action to rectangles
  • Relaxed type-checking to allow advanced users more flexibility when matching actions and properties
  • Support for a page alias
  • Property Broker Editor changes and improvements have been made including:
  • Usability improvements to the tool so it is easier to use
  • Support of new datatypes needed by the Notes client



Domino Server

Administration
  • 64-bit Domino server support - see the "Notes and Domino 8.0.1 platforms and system requirements" release note for more information
  • FIPS 140-2 support for document encryption on Win32
  • Beta support for AIX 6.1
  • JVM upgrade (1.5)
  • Pluggable rich text editor
  • Alternate language binding for new LotusScript 8 methods (local Java bindings)
  • Up-port the Outline Extension feature from 7.0.3 (for OpenText (formerly Hummingbird) and Interwoven)
  • Policy calculation code has moved from client to server, but caches on the client, in order to break server dependencies.
  • Policy settings include support for IBM Lotus Traveler
  • Fault Recovery / NSD and Automatic Data Collection for Macintosh clients
  • Document non-summary data (rich text field) compression
  • Domino Domain Monitoring allows use of a WebSphere Services probe subtype to monitor whether protocol requests are being processed for WebSphere services*

* This feature is not available on Domino for System i.


Installation

  • New server-managed settings have been added to the Domino Administrator server Configuration Settings document. These options enable you to control how the Eclipse update manager feature installs and updates features and composite applications on the Notes client
  • This release contains several enhancements to the Eclipse NSF-based update site (8) template (UPDATESITE.NTF) introduced in Notes 8
  • Windows directory permissions have been modified to accommodate security improvements made for Windows Vista and Windows XP SP2. This primarily affects the default and recommended directories for Notes single user install, but it also impacts user-initiated feature install and update in the Eclipse update manager. It also affects single user to multi-user upgrade
  • Upgrade from a previously installed version of WebSphere Portal composite application support for Lotus Notes, such as from Notes 8.0 to 8.0.1, is now supported
  • Notes has been enhanced to support the Windows Vista UAC ON security setting
  • Notes installation on the Apple Macintosh OS X platform is exposed as a beta technical preview in this release
  • New Widget Catalog (8) template (TOOLBOX.NTF) is supplied, on which to base the widget catalog application (TOOLBOX.NSF). Domino policy settings for the My Widgets feature access and catalog access are available on the new "Widgets" tab of the desktop policy settings document



Domino for i5/OS



Domino Web Access
  • Ability to add a personal signature to the bottom of outgoing mail messages in rich text
  • Delegate access to your Contacts when you delegate access to your Mail, Calendar, To Do and Notebook. For more information about setting Delegation preferences, see "Delegate access to Contacts" in the Documentation Updates section of these release notes
  • Create confidential contacts or mail groups, that cannot be accessed by those to whom you have granted access to your Contacts
  • Ability to display remote images (images that are referenced rather than embedded) in mail
  • Message Recall capability is available
  • A lite mode of Domino Web Access is available, which provides a subset of features to use when a quick connection is what you need. Lite mode is ideal from kiosks, or when accessing Domino Web Access using slower networks. For more information see "Domino Web Access Lite mode" in the Documentation Updates section of these release notes



Lotus Notes Traveler
  • IBM Lotus Notes Traveler provides two-way, over-the-air synchronization capability between Domino servers and Microsoft Windows Mobile handheld devices. Lotus Notes Traveler supports the synchronization of e-mail, calendar, to-do, address book, and journal data in real-time. For more information, see "Introducing IBM Lotus Notes Traveler" in these release notes.
