ACO5424E Obtaining the Correct SQLServername to Use with Tivoli Data Protection for SQL

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Tivoli Data Protection for SQL commands to connect to the SQL server fail with permutations of ACO5424E Unable to connect to SQL server (with additional info afterward).

Cause

Incorrect SQL server name specified.

Resolving the problem

Example errors that may be reported:

ACO5424E Could not connect to SQL server; SQL server returned:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist
or access denied.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 08001) (HRESULT:0x80040000)

ACO5424E Could not connect to SQL server; SQL server returned:
{Microsoft}{ODBC SQL Server Driver}{Shared Memory}Invalid connection
{Microsoft}{ODBC SQL Server Driver}{Shared Memory}ConnectionOpen
(Invalid Instance()). Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 08001)
(HRESULT: 0x80040000)

The HRESULT and SQLStates can be different. The most common reason for this behavior is that the value for the Tivoli Data Protection for SQL option "sqlserver" (in tdpsql.cfg) does not match the actual name of the SQL server to be contacted.

If the sqlserver option is not specified the default value is the local computer name, which may not be the SQL server name.

Tivoli Data Protection for SQL requires an explicitly-set value for the sqlserver option if the SQL server instance to which it should communicate is a clustered SQL server instance.

To obtain the name of the SQL server instance to be used by Tivoli Data Protection for SQL, enter the following command from the Microsoft SQL Query Analyzer (an MS SQL utility):

select @@servername

The output will display the correct SQL server name to be used by Tivoli Data Protection for SQL to connect to that SQL server instance.

For other methods (in later SQL server releases) of determining the SQL servername, please see the following article:

"ACO5424E Could not connect to SQL Server"
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21445251

If starting the Tivoli Data Protection for SQL GUI fails with ACO5424E message, ensure that the shortcut is specifying the correct SQL server name as the "/sqlserver" parameter. Check the Properties for the shortcut to see the value specified for this option.

Example:

C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\TDPSql\tdpsql.exe /sqlserver=xxx

Where "xxx" is the SQL server name.
