IBM Support

MQ Explorer: "unable to read workbench state. Workbench UI layout will be reset"

Troubleshooting

Problem

You install WebSphere MQ on your Windows. The installation was successful, however you did not use MQ for a month. Now you are getting the following error when trying to start the MQ Explorer: "unable to read workbench state. Workbench UI layout will be reset"

Resolving The Problem

Move the .metadata directory out of the '%APPDATA%\IBM\MQ Explorer' directory and try starting MQ Explorer with it not there. When you start the MQ Explorer, Eclipse should create a new .metadata directory if there was not one already there.

All your queue managers should still show up after the MQ Explorer starts. Also, you can put the old .metadata back in there as long as you do not delete it when you remove it from the '%APPDATA%\IBM\MQ Explorer' directory.

Note:
You can go to a DOS command prompt and issue "echo %APPDATA%" if you are not sure of the path, but it should be something like the following:

C:\Documents and Settings\<userid>\Application Data
or
C:\Users\<userid>\AppData\Local\Temp
depending on the Windows version.
