Error: 'You are not authorized to perform that operation' appears periodically when opening or deleting messages

Technote (FAQ)

Question

While working in Lotus Notes® mail for some period of time, typically an hour or two, upon opening or deleting a message, one of the following errors appear:

    "You are not authorized to perform that operation"

    -or-

    "You are not authorized to access that database".

Users can close the dialog box, but they cannot do anything else in Notes. After Notes is restarted users can continue working; however, the error occurs again in another hour or two.

Answer

Of all the users affected by this issue, the one thing in common is that they recently upgraded to McAfee VirusScan 8.5i.

To work around the issue, do either of the following:

1) Change the Notes Scanner Settings to disable "Scan all server databases" and "Scan server mailboxes".

or

2 ) Comment out the following lines in the local notes.ini by placing a semi-colon in front of the line:

AddInMenus=NCMenu
EXTMGR_ADDINS=NCExtMgr
