Problem
This technote explains why attempts to select various IBM® Rational® ClearCase® options on a Microsoft® Windows® operating systems results in the error, Failed to update the system registry. Please try using REGEDIT., and provides steps to resolve the issue.
Cause
This error can occur when operating applications in a secure environment where registry updates are restricted for normal (non-administrator) users.
Resolving The Problem
This solution contains information about modifying the system registry. Before making any modifications to the Microsoft Registry Editor, it is strongly recommended that you make a backup of the existing registry. There is a Microsoft Knowledge Base article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q255130/) that discusses giving all users at least "Set Value" permissions for certain keys in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT area of the registry.
If that is not allowed because of security restrictions in your environment, then the "Set Value" permission needs to be set for all users to any HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key with the word ClearCase or Rational in the key. For example:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ClearCase.Application
In addition, under each key containing the word ClearCase or Rational is a subkey called CLSID. In that key is a hexadecimal value for the application. The corresponding CSLID key also needs to have the "Set Value" permissions set.
For example:
If
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ClearCase.Application\CLSID = {0F033F1B-6E74-11D2-9B9B-006097DF8E26}
then find
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0F033F1B-6E74-11D2-9B9B-006097DF8E26}
and give it "Set Value" permissions for all users who use that system.
