Defective drivers for the Intel PRO/1000 MT network interface card can cause cleartext corruption

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote details how to resolve cleartext container corruption issues caused by the driver version of the Intel® PRO/1000 MT network interface card (NIC) in a host with IBM® Rational® ClearCase® installed.

Cause

Corruption is seen in random text files after loading a substantial amount of data in a remotely stored snapshot views or adding files to source control within a dynamic view with local or remote storage when using an Intel PRO/1000 MT NIC.

The corruption is caused by a bad network card driver version 6.1.15.2; the driver causes the card to send "Jumbo Frames" over the line.

Note:
Driver version 6.2.21.19 has also been reported as causing the same issue.

These jumbo frames contain packets larger than 1500 KB in size and cause random binary characters to be inserted into the cleartext. The binary characters corrupt the cleartext, hence, the file will appear incorrect when viewing it on the client machine.

Resolving The Problem

Upgrade the NIC to the latest Intel PRO/1000 MT drivers to resolve this issue.

The driver set can be found on Intel's Support Web Site: http://www.intel.com/support/network/sb/CS-006120.htm
