Troubleshooting
Problem
This technote explains why the error, unable to determine version for VOB root directory element, occurs when trying to update an IBM® Rational® ClearCase® snapshot view on Microsoft® Windows®, UNIX® and Linux®.
Symptom
When updating a snapshot view, an error occurs.
cleartool update -overwrite -pti -force -add /ps/builds/cc_views/aml_deployment_baseline_on_anna/aml_deployment_baseline/aml_deployment_baseline
cleartool: Error: Unable to determine version for VOB root directory element.
cleartool: Error: Unable to access
"/aml_deployment_baseline/aml_deployment_baseline": No such file or directory.
cleartool: Error: 1 config spec load rule problems encountered.
cleartool: Error: Unable to add config spec load rules for update.
Note: There is no view update log created when this error occurs.
Cause
The problem is that the VOB does not have a tag in the region to which the snapshot view is being used.
Resolving The Problem
Create the VOB tag in the correct region:
Note: This is a UNIX example, but applies to Windows and Linux.
cleartool mktag -replace -vob -tag /aml_deployment_baseline -public -host sutton -gpath /mnt/cc_server/VOBs/aml_deployment_baseline.vbs
/mnt/cc_server/VOBs/aml_deployment_baseline.vbs
After creating the tag, the update will now succeed in this region.
On Windows you could also add the VOB tag from the ClearCase Administration Console (Start > Run and type: ccadminconsole.msc):
