Error: "Server exiting: The Notes data directory is in use by another Notes program..." using Terminal Services

Technote (FAQ)

Question

In Microsoft® Windows® 2003, when you attempt to log in to a Lotus Domino server via Terminal Services, the following error appears:

    "Server exiting: The Notes Data Directory is in use by another Notes program (possibly on another computer). You must first shut down all Notes programs (for example, the Administration program) that share this Data Directory."

It appears that Domino is unexpectedly already running and responding to Notes client connections.

Answer

Use the /console switch to log remotely into a Windows 2003 machine. Because Domino is not virtual session aware, if the /console switch is not used, a virtual session to the machine will be created and a new instance of Domino will be started.

1. Click Start -> Run.
2. Type mstsc /console
3. Click OK.

Note: You can also alter a shortcut so it launches mstsc with the /console switch.

Supporting Information
The same message will also appear when Domino is configured to run as a service, but the Startup folder also contains nserver.exe.
