Can both SNA and TCP/IP traffic over an X.25 network be shared on a single multichannel link?

Question & Answer

Question

We would like to connect TCP/IP stations to our host over X.25. But we have already connected SNA terminals to the host using NCP Packet Switching Interface (NPSI). Is it possible for the NPSI communication and transmission control program (CTCP) to manage the virtual circuit to SNA and TCP/IP Data Terminal Equipments (DTEs) on a single physical line?

Answer

When using the NPSI X.25 Dedicated Access to the X.25 Transport Extension (DATE) interface for TCP/IP it is not possible to share a multichannel (MCH)-link for TCP/IP and SNA traffic.

However, the z/OS Communications Server TCP/IP protocol suite also supports the NPSI General Access to X.25 Transport Extension (GATE) interface. Using GATE you can share a multichannel (MCH)-link between TCP/IP and SNA traffic. The selection, TCP/IP or SNA, is done at connection setup time using either the CUD0 field of the incoming call packet or subaddressing.

For more information, see "X.25 NCP Packet Switching Interface" in the IP Configuration Guide.
