Error: 'Cannot convert MIME message to Notes Rich Text' when rejecting e-mails

Technote (FAQ)

Question

In Lotus Domino, mail messages are being rejected by the Domino server, with the following error messages:

    "Cannot convert MIME message to Notes Rich Text"
    or
    "HTTP Web Server: Lotus Notes Exception - Cannot convert MIME to Notes Rich Text message" (this message was reported by the HTTP task)

The issue occurs on a Domino server running on a Linux operating system.

The following checks were made but the problem still persisted:
    -- The Person Document field, "Format Preference for incoming mail," was set to "Keep in senders' format".

    -- The notes.ini file does not contain the parameter, MailConvertMimeonTransfer=1.

    -- Views and indexes were updated using CTRL+SHIFT+F9.

    -- The Name Lookup Cache was refreshed with the command, "show nlcache reset".

    -- The following mail debug parameters were set:
      debugrouter=3
      log_mailrouting=40
The "show mail debugs" command displayed the following:
    03/04/2006 11:01:34 00344C1A: CVS: Not initialized
    03/04/2006 11:01:34 MIME to CD error

Answer

This situation occurs because the mail contains non-ASCII characters and the Domino server is trying to convert the MIME message to Notes rich text which it cannot do.

You can work around this issue by editing the .bash_profile file on the operating system. Set the "LANG" variable as follows: LANG=en_US.UTF-8

NOTE: This document discusses an issue which was observed when the Domino server was running on a Linux operating system. The information may not be directly related to observing the same error when running under other operating systems.
