MVFS does not support clustered systems or kernels

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote explains why the IBM Rational ClearCase MVFS fails to load during installation on UNIX or Linux operating systems.

Symptom

Installing ClearCase on a UNIX (or Linux) system results in this error:

Note: The output below was taken from a Tru64 host.

ClearCase daemons: albd_server lockmgr
Loading mvfs ...
framework error: subsystem 'mvfs' failure
subsystem error: I/O error
/usr/atria/etc/atria_start: Loading MVFS failed

mvfs: Error: Unable to determine MVFS file system type
Trouble mounting the viewroot "/view"(16:1)
/usr/atria/etc/mvfslog: Unable to open view root: not a ClearCase object
Trouble setting MVFS kernel log file to /var/adm/atria/log/mvfs_log(2:1)
Mounting public VOBs...
cleartool: Error: The MVFS file system is not installed or not loaded,or the 'viewroot' is not mounted or is inaccessible: not a ClearCase object.
Trouble mounting public VOBs(32:1)

The /var/adm/messages file reports:

Jun 10 13:42:07 hostname vmunix: MVFS does not support clustered systems or kernels.

Cause

The UNIX operating system was configured as a cluster resulting in the MVFS failure to load.

Review technote 1127354 Support Policy for High Availability clustering and ClearCase for information about supported configurations.

Resolving The Problem

Reconfigure the operating system, such that it is no longer in a cluster configuration, then uninstall and install Rational ClearCase again.
